Epitaph
Never had I much …
Never had I lacked …
Yet … I shared
In the village of Vrpolje, near Trebinje, there is a necropolis comprising eighteen stećaks. One of them bears an inscription indicating that it is the resting place of Prefect Medulin. The inscription indicates that he was not a rich man, though he always did good deeds. There is no information as to who Prefect Medulin was, other than an assumption that he was not a Vlach, since he bore the title of župan, and not of katunar [katun was the basic unit of social organization of the Vlach community] or vojvoda [duke, prince] as Vlach representatives usually did. The epitaph probably dates back to the second half of the 14th century.
